Your fuel filter helps protect your engine by trapping dirt, rust, and other contaminants before they reach the fuel injectors. Need to replace your fuel filter? Here's how.

How To Replace the Fuel Filter in a Chevrolet Equinox

1. Relieve Fuel System Pressure

Start by removing the fuel pump fuse or relay and then start your engine. Let it run until it stalls, which ensures minimal fuel remains in the lines. Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.

2. Locate the Fuel Filter

In most Chevrolet Equinox models, the fuel filter is located along the frame rail under the vehicle or near the fuel tank. Refer to your owner's manual for the exact location.

3. Disconnect the Lines

Use a fuel line disconnect tool to carefully detach the lines from both sides of the filter. Expect a little fuel spillage, so keep a container and rags handy.

4. Install the New Filter

Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one. Make sure the arrow on the filter points in the direction of fuel flow toward the engine. Reconnect the lines securely and double-check for leaks.

5. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect your battery, replace the fuel pump fuse, and turn the key to the ON position (without starting) to pressurize the system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.

What to Check When Oil Is Leaking

While servicing your fuel system, consider checking the condition of your oil pan gasket. Preventing leaks in all areas of your engine helps ensure top performance.
